Attorney-client privilege is, in its ordinary form, unremarkable. A client tells a lawyer something in confidence. The lawyer cannot be compelled to disclose it. The purpose is to encourage candour in the attorney-client relationship — to ensure that clients can speak freely without fear that their own words will be used against them.
